पुन्हा आवडत्या खेळपट्टीवर

आमच्या पोरांनी चांगला खेळ केला, आम्ही टार्गेटच्या फार जवळ गेलो हो, पण….. हा 'पण'च गेल्या बर्‍याच परदेश दौर्‍यांपासून भारताला चिकटून आहे, फेविकॉल पेक्षा जास्त चिवट. आता कारणमीमांसा केली तर, अतंर्गत गोष्टीच जास्त प्रकर्षाने पुढे येताहेत. आणि आता या संघाच्या अंतर्गत गोष्टी कॅप्टन आणि कोच यांनाच सोडवाव्या लागतील.

टीम चांगल्या स्थितीत ठेवून तिला पुढे घेऊन जाणे आणि त्यासाठी त्यातील शिलेदार निवडणे हा कर्णधाराचा हक्क असतो, जेणेकरुन एक चांगला समतोल साधला जाईल. मान्य, पण काही खेळाडुंना पर्यायच नाही आणि तेच सर्वोत्तम, अशा भ्रमात धोनीसाहेब आहेत किंवा तसं दाखवत तरी आहेत. याच भ्रमाचा फायदा घेऊन, भारतीय संघातील नाजूक कळ इतर संघ दाबत आहेत, आणि त्याचा अनावश्यक भार दोन प्रमुख खेळाडू, कोहली आणि स्वतः कॅप्टनसाहेब यांच्यावर पडतोय. एक मध्यमगती अष्टपैलु खेळाडू विदेशी पिचवर हवा आहे हे उमजतंय, पण तो खेळाडू उपलब्ध असूनही त्याचा वापर केला जात नाही, किंवा तो अस्पृश्य असल्यासारखा संघाच्या बाहेर ठेवला जातो. असंच धोरण राहिलं तर ही परवड अशीच चालू राहील.

गोलंदाज चेंडू टाकेल, तो खेळपट्टीवर पडेल, फलंदाज चूक करेल, आणि आपल्याला विकेट मिळेल... असं पक्कं गणित आपल्या कॅप्टनच्या मनात बसलंय! आपले गोलंदाज आणि हाताशी असलेले खेळाडू, यांना योग्य ठिकाणी पेरून विकेट खेचाव्या लागतात, हे धोनी विसरलाय, किंवा टेस्ट क्रिकेट मध्ये त्याला जास्त रुची नाही, असं दिसतंय. गांगुलीने अगदी समर्पकपणे याचे वर्णन एका वाक्यात केले आहे, "सध्याची धोनीची कॅप्टनशीप ही ओंगळवाणी आहे."

आता एशिया कप! आपल्या घरच्याच मातीत. सुंदर अशा निर्जिव, मंद खेळपट्टीवर. जडेजा, रोहित शर्मा, अश्विन या आपल्या धुरंधर, विक्रमी खेळाडूंना पुन्हा स्फुरण चढेल. पुन्हा धावांच्या मोठ्या थप्पी रचल्या जातील, तीनशे काय आणि साडेतीनशे काय! भारत आणि पकिस्तान सामना हे स्पर्धेचे (नेहमीप्रमाणे) प्रमुख आकर्षण ठरणार. बिचारे गोलंदाज! काही सन्माननीय अपवाद वगळले तर, ओव्हरला सहापेक्षा कमी धावा देऊन आपला कोटा कसा संपेल, या चिंतेतच गोलंदाजी करतील. सोबत विकेट मिळाली, तर बोनस मिळाल्याचा आनंद. थोड्याफार फरकाने सर्व एशियन टीम्सचा हाच चेहरा आहे म्हणा. ते म्हणतात ना, अं…. हा!!, "फ्लॅट ट्रॅक बुलीज, घरच्या मैदानावर शिंगे फुटलेले बैल."

Back to the dusty track

Our team played good cricket, we came close, but….. This 'but' has played a big and consistent role in India’s poor performance in the last four away tours. And yet, we are not able to bridge this gap between defeat and victory. There are some micro and macro factors which are contributing to this debacle, the micro factors being more important. And at this level, Dhoni and Fletcher have big roles to play.

Captain always stays at helm and drives his team. So obviously the rights of selection are very much reserved for him. He demands or induces players which he thinks could strike a right balance. But the real fact is that Dhoni is investing in few players with false notion. He is relying too much on his intuition in decision making, including the team combination. Our current batting line-up, in ODI's and Test as well, has the fragility that has been getting exposed by opposition. Also, vacuum created by this fragility is putting too much burden on Kohli and Dhoni himself to salvage the situation. On greenish pitch away from home, team needs a pace-bowling all-rounder, he knows that. But despite having such player in service, he does not give enough chances to him.

Dhoni expects things to get in their place by chance, always. And more often he shows undue reluctance to be creative for diverting adverse situation in to propitious one. All these things are leading to slump in India’s overseas performance. It is getting like ‘India’s performance overseas is inversely proportional to the performance at sweet home.’ Saurabh Ganguly has rightly expressed about Dhoni’s captain-ship, "It's obnoxious!"

Now we are back to our own den ready for Asia cup. We will again cherish those flat, dusty, super-dead pitches. Players like Jadeja, Ashwin, Rohit Sharma would be on track, ready to give that extraordinary performance!  Bowlers, excluding one or two exceptions, would look to finish their quota with less than six runs per over, with wickets as complementary gift. More or less, all the Asian teams are molded in the same theory though. The brand of their own style typically termed as flat pitch bullies!
